Dachshund Resources

Here are some links to sites that will help you learn a lot about dachshunds, talk a lot about dachshunds, or just look at lots of pictures of adorable dachshunds!

AKC Breed Standard
. This page from the American Kennel Club website describes the characteristics that are desirable in a show dachshund. Our favorite part is the description of the desired temperament: “lively and courageous to the point of rashness.” Sounds like most dachsies we know!

Dachshund.org (DORG). Dachshund.org is an on-line dachshund magazine with enough features to keep you reading late into the night. You can learn how to curb your dachshund’s barking, find out what should be in your doggy first aid kit, check out the daily cartoon, buy dachsie products, search for lost or stolen dogs, and read dachshund news from around the world. The “magazine” is updated frequently. A terrific site!

Dachshund Circus. The Dachshund Circus is one of the oldest dachsies sites on the web. Photos, articles, the Wiener Writings bulletin board, tributes to dachsies who have passed over the Rainbow Bridge—it’s a great site!

Dachshund Club of America. If you are new to dachshunds and want to learn all you can about them, this is the page for you! The venerable Dachshund Club of America has been conducting shows, doing rescue, and educating the public for decades. Their informative website begins with a picture and brief description of a badger; the animal dachshunds were originally bred to hunt.

The Dachshund Memorial Garden
. A peaceful place, where dachshunds that have left this world are remembered by those they left behind with photos, stories, poems, and sometimes just simple expressions of grief. If you have lost your best friend, you can memorialize him or her here. There are special pages for rescue dogs and for dogs rescued too late.

Dachshund Orthopedic Disc Group Email Resource
. This website is devoted to the prevention, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of degenerative disc disease, as well as support for those who have dachshunds with back problems.

Dachshunds on the World Wide Web. Check out this website for links to dachshund sites all over the world. Dachshund-lovers worldwide have posted photos of their dachsies here too.

For the Love of Dachsies. This comprehensive dachshund site includes numerous links, tons of information, and what many of us consider the best dachshund bulletin board on the web, Dachsie’s Bulletin Board.

National Miniature Dachshund Club. If you love minis, this is the site for you! The NMDC is an organization that seeks to improve miniature dachshunds through adherence to breed standards in both conformation and temperament. Their site has tons of info on the littlest dachsies!

What Color Is My Dachshund? Need to know the difference between a black-and-tan dapple, silver dapple, and black-and-tan double dapple? This is the site for you! On this site you will find not only extensive definitions of the many variations in dachshund coat color, but good photos for each type. You probably had no idea there were that many different dachsies colors!

The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement
. This nonprofit association is a clearinghouse on information to help those suffering the loss of a pet. You can find support groups, chat rooms, counselors, and much more.

The Barking Lot
. Pamela Dennison believes that "if you don't have time to train your dog, get a stuffed animal!" And we would have to agree, since many dogs that end up in shelters are surrendered because they "misbehave" -- i.e., their owners have not bothered to train them. What approach is best? Pamela believes in positive training, and you'll find lots of information about using positive methods to train your dog on this site. Pamela also provides extensive answers to training questions on this page. All dogs deserve the right to learn to be good citizens! This is an excellent site to help you get started!

Blind Dogs
. This is a wonderful site for people who own or are thinking of adopting a blind dog. A lot of useful information, as well as support. Blind dogs can live long and happy lives, as this website makes abundantly clear!

Care for Animals. Animal Safety Tips. A comprehensive animal safety site, with tips on poison control, safe travel, home safety, and so on. First aid basics too!

The Dog Center
. This web site has dozens of articles on canine first aid, illnesses, and behavior.
Here are links to some important first-aid articles:

First Aid for Dogs:

Dogs and Diets
. Basic info about the different types of dog food.

Dogs with Disabilities
. Meet Seymour, the 17-year-old "disabled" dachshund who found a new life after he got a cart. He is the inspiration for this site, which provides useful information on caring for a disabled dog and links to dog disability sites.

Dog Food Comparison Charts
.  This is THE website for learning all about what's in that can or bag of dog food in your pantry.  Highly informative, easy to navigate.  Click on Dog Food Analysis for all the facts, and be sure to check out the ingredient known as "animal digest" (or "poultry digest"), which you will find in the ingredients list of many dog foods and treats.  May change the way you feed your dog!
Estate Planning for Dogs.
A professor of law provides detailed information on how to ensure your dog's care in the event of your death.

Finding a Lost Pet.
We hope you never have to use this web page, but if your dog or cat is lost, the information here will help you bring your loved one home. It's amazingly comprehensive, and there are ideas you probably haven't thought of.

Heal-A-Pet
. The Heal-A-Pet page offers "remote healing" for your sick or injured pet at no charge. You can think of it as kind of a prayer circle for pets. Some of our members swear by it.

Health Education
. Got a question about a health issue? Want to do research on a drug your vet or a friend has recommended? This site, maintained by the Drs. Foster and Smith of catalogue fame, is full of specific medical information for pets of all kinds.

How to Love Your Dog
. This wonderful site is for kids! It teaches children respect for dogs and provides thought-provoking lessons and stimulating activities for kids and their own dogs.

Names for Your Dog
. This is an interesting and fun Web site, with lots and LOTS of potential names, in many languages, for your new dog.

Nothing in Life Is Free (NILIF).
Here is a link to a basic behavior modification program that many of our members absolutely swear by! It's simple, nonconfrontational, and easy to implement, and it gets results!

Pet Guardian Angels of America.
This site has it all--rescue links (for our feline friends, as well as dogs), health hints, photos, discussions of timely topics (puppy mill legislation, antifreeze dangers), and links to other sites. You can find info here not only on dogs and cats, but also on birds, fish, reptiles, and other pets. This is also the place to go to order those helpful stickers that alert firefighters and police officers to the presence of your
pets. A very informative site!

Pets Welcome. A terrific resource for those wanting to take their pets with them on their travels! Find accommodations that accept pets and even make reservations on-line via this site! You can even specify the kind of place you want to stay in—a B&B, rental cottage, or hotel!

Take Your Pet. A travel club (you have to join) for people who want to travel with their pets. You can find lodgings, read what others who have stayed there have to say, get discounts at pet-friendly establishments, and find groomers, vets, kennels, and other resources to help you enjoy your vacation.

Training Your Dog.
A series of articles on all aspects of dog training, from basic puppy training to handling aggression to whether punishment is ever justified. An outstanding site, and a must for all dog owners!

Veterinary Medical Information
. Another excellent resource for information on canine diseases and other medical conditions; easy to use, extensive information.
